Axe

First, yes this was up at JS, It’s a Hibben Axe. Originally a throwing axe and hence illegal to posses in Victoria without an exemption (Now if they hadn’t termed it a throwing axe but as a plain axe it’s legal status changes though nothing else does. Politician is not synonymous with idiot but this law certainly is damning evidence)

I’ve gone at it with a die grinder, opening up the original small hole to something you can put your finger in for fine control as well as deepening the hook (and allowing a better forward grip) and smoothing down some handle protrusions. I’d certainly not have done it with a file as it’s 440C stainless steel, it’s hard and takes a great edge.

A great little axe that’s due for some more attention when I can get a chance.

I finally got it.

A chainmaille vest. Stainless steel, 5/32 welded rings and weighs about 3Kg. I saved on shipping but paid for that in the delay in getting it. It’s the largest size they have and I think I could have dropped the size a little, but if you get it wrong there’s no give and it won’t fit without inserting more rings.

New Game

Well in preparation for a Zombie Apocalypse there is an app/game Outbreak Zombie Apocalypse for Android phones. Basically you install, start the game and are either clean or undead. If you’re clean you can stun zombies for a time (the length of time depends on your level) or if not Brainzzzz. The game is still only Beta and has a few hiccups, like being able to see a zombie in range but not be able to attack it (quickly shut down and restart normally fixes it) and that it defaults to satellite view rather than map (more data usage). I had fun on Sunday, ran the parents to the airport and wasted some time in the CBD whilst I waited for the time to pass so I could call in to a mates at a reasonable hour (also leveled up a couple of times). The game site and leader boards (not bad for playing for only eight days ).

Technomage Trilogy

Well the first thing is watch Babylon 5 and then Crusade. This trilogy shows how much background JMS built into B5 universe. Scenes from the show are repeated in the books and merge seamlessly into the narrative, and also explain some things like just how Sheridan managed to defeat the Shadow defenses and get the White Star into Z’ha’dum. It also gives a lot of background into the Technomages, how they started, their aims and abilities. If you are a fan of B5 then you really should read these books.

Andromeda some thoughts

Well it’s not high art and ignores science as well as Star Wars does. What it does do well is a good romp, though I haven’t watched it I suspect “Hercules” to the stars was part of the pitch. There are some glaring faults such as towing the Andromeda from the event horizon of a black hole (perfect proof that light has mass, if it were mass-less it would escape a black hole). The force lance suffers the same problem as Dr Who’s sonic screwdriver, it became a writer’s crutch. Ranged weapon, hand to hand weapon, trapped weapon and anti mortar. If it’s so good why do most of the crew not use it when plenty are available? Why didn’t Harper (genius engineer) personalize one?

The show also suffered from losing Robert Hewitt Wolfe before the show finished, if he was still there I doubt the fifth season would have gone as it had, a hard right turn away from what it had been. The show definitely had a good sense of humour and it was enjoyable though not deep. Worth watching but not a must see.

Back in town

Well I survived. I only got crook on the flight home, so I can’t recommend the beef burgers at Dhaka airport. In all a good trip, interesting and different.

Firstly I (and companion) were well looked after, unfortunately our hotel accommodation wasn’t going to happen (plant three hours from Dhaka) and so our expectations of a bar (beer!) weren’t met and having disregarded my travel rule of carrying as much duty free as possible, we ended up dry. Generally not an issue but it’s something to look forward to at the end of the day (no bar, no pool, limited TV).

General impressions, lots of people, lots of traffic, a lot of poverty, a lot of security mindset, monuments, road rules?, helpful people, I was tall.

I’m not sure if the lock is to keep me in or them out. The bathroom BYO toilet paper, pretty much the rule everywhere in Bangladesh.

No shower curtain either. I found the only thing harder than their pillows was the beds, proper mattress but no give even under my weight.

Working in Bangladesh, well like a pornstar you’d better be able to perform in front of an audience.
